What is a
Mandibular Advancement Device?
A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) or a Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD), is a custom-made oral appliance worn during sleep to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic snoring.
The device fits over your upper and lower teeth, similar to a mouthguard or a retainer. It works by repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) gently forward. This forward shift pulls the base of the tongue away from the back of the throat, preventing the soft tissues from collapsing and narrowing the airway. A narrowed airway means less oxygenated air can reach your lungs. By widening the airway, it reduces air turbulence, which creates the sound that we know as snoring.
